Whoever said the race doesn't always go to the swiftest didn't work in retail store planning. If the store isn't open on time and on budget, the financial losses can be painful. What can store planners do to ensure an on-time, first-place finish?
1. Get buy-in from all interested parties early on
Get your visual merchandisers from the various departments together with the store planner, architect, designer, general contractor, and various vendors at the outset of the project to create consensus on overall objectives.
If you can't get everyone together in one room, then try an online communication method like broadcast e-mail or a business chat room. The important thing is to make sure everyone has a chance to offer input before designing and engineering begin.
NASFM members gathered in Nashville Dec. 2-5, 2001, to explore ways both to speed up and simplify the fixture manufacturing process for their retail customers. Bill Kooie, engineering manager for Amstore Corp., a fixture manufacturer based in Coopersville, Mich., talks about the benefits of bringing everyone together before the project begins: "As we explore together we get to that 'aha' moment where a new solution arises." Combining insights early on can save more time than you might imagine, and you may even discover design solutions you'd otherwise never consider.
2. Ask for recommendations from your fixture manufacturer
In any design process, the options are endless. In order to whittle the list down to a more manageable size, ask your fixture manufacturer to recommend the three or four best options based on the project's overall objectives. By utilizing the expertise of the professionals, you'll find it easier to make decisions, and to make more informed decisions. This is an easy way to streamline the development process.
3. See if your fixture manufacturer can provide more than just fixtures
Fewer vendors can simplify your life- and sometimes speed up the manufacturing process. In addition to manufacturing fixtures, many fixture manufacturers provide architectural millwork, flooring, consolidation services, and coordination of specialty services like lighting and technology. Explore the full capabilities of your manufacturer early on.
4. Communicate clearly and frequently
Using 3D and CAD software can make it easy for several decisionmakers simultaneously to review and mark up drawings and color renderings. Alert your vendors to problem areas and project changes as soon as you know about them-this will save you time and possibly money. Whether you use traditional or high-tech tools, communicating ideas and changes quickly and accurately will keep your project heading toward the finish line.
